CO2 for aspirin production

Bayer HealthCare produces some 15,000 kilograms of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) a day at its plant in the Spanish town of La Felguera. This equates to approximately 85 per cent of the chemical and pharmaceutical group’s global ASA requirement for aspirin production. Messer in Spain has been supplying Bayer HealthCare with the carbon dioxide needed for the production of ASA since March 2012. For several decades, Messer has supplied the Bayer MaterialScience plant in Tarragona with oxygen and nitrogen by pipeline. The Tarragona plant produces MDI for polyurethanes, which are used in the production of foams and sealants as well as paints.
